I often get patients who come in and tell me I came in because my tooth hurts. Many patients do not know what is normal response for tooth to feel when introduced to stimulus.
If your tooth has quick and sharp pain to temperature it would be considered a normal. (lasting no more than 5 seconds) Often this maybe caused by gingivitis brought on by stress, poor oral hygiene, and/or fatigue.
If a tooth has lingering pain, throbbing pain, or spontaneous pain (nothing was done to the tooth) this would be considered major issue that needs to be looked at.
This post is to help you understand the difference in various pain you feel but coming in for a evaluation will give you best diagnosis on what is causing discomfort in your mouth.
SIDE NOTE “coming in with a log that documents what triggers tooth ache, when and how often can really help in diagnosis.”

I, Dr Mike Whan Cho, often see patients who come for their cleaning and find one side which tends to develop heavier amount of buildup. This maybe the result of missing tooth/teeth and result of over using one side. Another common theme is that we all have daily routine and start on one side and loose focus by the time we reach our end of brushing cycle.
To prevent this, I recommend using mechanical brush such as Sonicare or Oral B and instruct patient on how to use it right. At DDS Dental we help you answer many questions and feel free to post your questions. Visit us at ddsdentalps.com, in Marysville for additional questions. Dr Mike
